City Planning Vision

Tokyo is known for their constant growth and revitalization in it’s metropolitan and local areas. It is in fact one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world with about 13 million people in the city. The Bureau of Urban Development revised the City Planning Vision for Tokyo in the year 2009 with respect to its current state and changes in the city. This vision aims at forwarding the practice of urban planning to focus on the city’s importance on matters such as the environment, cityscape, housing, transportation, etc., in order to create a more attractive and prosperous city, as well as become the leading city in terms of environmental standards. With that being said, the Bureau of Urban Development constructs goals and basic strategies to achieve this vision. Stated directly from the Bureau of Urban Development:

Six goals:

  • Maintain and develop urban dynamism that is internationally competitive

  • Coexist with the global environment, which is critical to sustainable development

  • Restore beautiful urban spaces surrounded by rich greenery and water

  • Create, convey, and pass down our unique urban culture

  • Create a city where residents can live comfortably, safely, and with peace of mind

  • Obtain and coordinate the participation of a variety of entities, including residents, municipalities, corporations, and non-profit organizations [1].

Seven Strategies:

  • Improve the regional transportation infrastructure

  • Establish centers that increase economic vitality

  • Make the transition to a low-carbon city

  • Form networks of water and greenery

  • Create attractive urban spaces

  • Achieve an improved living environment

  • Create a highly safe, disaster-resistant city [1].
